If you've ever answered the question; what's your favorite color, with, "red," then you know how difficult it is to get the right red, for the right place, in a paint color for your home. Heck, it's difficult to find the right red in a piece of clothing...but that's another story!
Often even thinking of using a red on a wall in your home is traumatic!
Well, here are 2 Secrets and a Tip to start helping you overcome that fear of red paint....and no, I won't make you watch the old Beatles movie "Help."
The color red is known to stimulate the appetite, and conversation. Red is also known for passion, love, enthusiasm and positive energy. Are there places in your home that you might want to encourage those energies?
Stop and think a minute. How many restaurants can you name off the top of your head that have red in their decor? I'll bet there are several at least. I'll even go one step further and bet that you can think of a couple different styles of restaurants, too. For example, the light and bright open feeling of the Italian family restaurant on the corner, or the dimly lit romantic restaurant with dark red leather booths, thick carpet, and roses on the table.
See, that's two totally different pictures in your mind for the use of red. In your minds eye, those pictures have two very different reds, don't they? The first example is a brighter red, probably an orange red, while the second example is a darker red, possible a burgundy red, like a fine merlot.
And with that "visual" if you will, you clearly "feel" two types of emotion and/or energy that is directly connected to the use of red.
Secret One
I'll bet you are already thinking of all the reds that you see every day, and how different they are! That is the first secret in thinking about painting a red color in your home. Picture in your mind all those different reds in your everyday life. Now that you can envision all those reds, you can more comfortably start the search for the perfect red to add to your home decor.
Things to think about to start the process:
- Into which room do you want to add red, kitchen, living, bath or bedroom
- How prominent do you want the color to be, all over or an accent
- How much and what kind of daylight is in the room, morning, afternoon, or both
Secret Two
Now you're ready to make a trip to the paint store, but heed this advice. Go to at least 2 different stores.
Each paint manufacturer starts with different formulas in their base paint.
Collect strips in your chosen color range from each manufacturer. That way, when you get home you'll be able to make a good decision as to which manufacturer's colors will work best. Some are more pastel, some more "grayed," some more saturated.
Tip
This may seem a bit off the wall, but bear with me.
First, never look at the paint color names when you are choosing color. Hold the strips at arms length if need be. The names will influence your choices, whether you want to admit it or not!
Second, if this color family is still holding you up with fear...think of those colors that are in your minds eye as something related to food. Yep, think paprika, cayenne, or even red velvet cake! Believe me, this simple trick will help you get over your fear of not only red, but color in general!
This short article doesn't even begin to cover everything involved with working with the color red, or any color for that matter, but hopefully it will give you a lighthearted, stress free way to get over your fears of adding color and beauty to your home.
