We all have our favorite colors. With the art of feng shui, the use of color takes on an importance beyond whether we like it or not. Learn how color plays a role in your home's tranquility.

There are five elements that are essential to feng shui: fire, wood, metal, earth and wind. Each element is associated with a color or a group of similar colors that represent its energy. You'll be surprised to see where you favorite color turns up.

Earth - According to feng shui ideology, beige and light shades like a pale yellow are associated with the Earth element and Earth is responsible for promoting stability in our lives. These shades brighten us up leading to a feeling of anything is possible.

Fire - Associated colors in the element of fire are orange, bright yellow, pink, purple and red. Passion or heat is what comes to mind when thinking of fire. Either is an apt description of fire and as you might imagine fire gets your heart going which in turn creates energy.

Wood - The wood element is synonymous in feng shui with life and prosperity. Trees burst with life; brown wood and lush green leaves that provide life. Brown for the wood and green for the leaves are the colors of Wood.

Metal - Metal is the element responsible for bringing clarity to your life with its well defined shapes and lines. White and gray are the colors of metal.

Water - Water is an element that represents abundance and a refreshing spirit. When you bathe in water it makes you feel clean. Using the colors of blue and black in your home promotes that purity.

The use of color in your home is not just about painting the walls. It's also about the furniture, the accent pieces and the artwork in the room as well. I encourage you to let the feng shui energy map be your guide and then invigorate your home with vivid colors that heighten the energy vibration. Don't be afraid of using colors. Instead, be bold and you'll be happily surprised by the results.

In Feng Shui, the kitchen has a long record of symbolizing health, wealth and excess. The food you store and prepare there supplies sustenance and nourishment, enabling you to flourish in the world. Making meals and cleaning up later are vital ways to show how much you care for yourself and your loved ones.

Here are Top-Ten Feng Shui Tips for making your kitchen into the "healthy heart" of your home.

1. Clean everything within & out. This includes drawers and upboards, appliances, walls and counters. Line shelves with new liner paper, and give the floor a good scrub.

2. Appraise what you actually use. Feng Shui asks that you keep only what you use, need, or love. As you remove things from upboards and drawers, ask yourself when you last used this item, and what the possibility is of using it. If you want to keep an item you seldom use, consider deep storage, or make room for it on higher kitchen shelves.

3. Clear the counters. Remove everything from the countertops to clean them off and ask yourself, "How often do I use this?" before you put it back. Many appliances live on the countertop unquestioningly.

4. Put like with like. As you take things out, put like things together. For instance, separate sweet baking spices from tasty ones, and store coffee filters near your coffee mugs. You'll make your life feel just that much more straightforward going forward.

5. Adjust shelves to maximize storage space. Most cabinet shelves are adjustable. As you concentrate on putting your newly-organized things back in the cupboards, separate tall items from shorter ones and adjust your shelf-height accordingly .

6. Use "shelf helpers" for simplicity and efficiency. Items like tray racks, lazy susans, and stacking shelves don't cost much, and they can change your life. Get good "chi energy" flowing by ensuring everything works. Fix things that are broken. Check that doors swing freely. Replace chipped spoons and sharpen your knives. In Feng Shui this is a critical step - things that are well-cared-for signify your intention to take the best care of yourself, too!

7. Create a safe place for paperwork. Paper processing in the kitchen creates bafflement, and can be perilous. If your kitchen has turned into a mini home-office, is time to get the papers out of there.

8. Recognize the significance of your stove. The burner, a powerful Feng Shui symbol of Wealth in your life, is the center-piece of this "Heart of Your Home" and must be treated with particular respect. One way to do this is by noting your disposition to use just one or two burners. Spread the wealth and use them all to bring more healthy energy into your home.

9. Use mirrors to form more wealth. In Feng Shui, the burners on your stove symbolize wealth coming into your home. You can multiply this by simply placing a mirror behind the stove so that it reflects the burners. This mirror also reflects activity behind you as you cook, so it brings in a desirable component of safety and comfort too.

10. Balance the elements. Finally, your kitchen already contains 4 of the five components of Feng Shui : Fire, Water, Metal and Earth elements. The part that's sometimes missing, Wood, can be brought in simply with stuff like fruit or a tiny plant - or an image of one of these. When the elements are balanced, a space feels great.

Is your kitchen everything it might be? Have a look and use Feng Shui to make the changes -- you may notice the uplift immediately!

Despite what you think, feng shui is not an exotic recipe fro the orient. Its actually a classic, centurys old method of bringing peace and harmony to your home or office. Its becoming increasingly more and more popular so why not read on discover what these two words mean.

Feng shui is a spiritual system that began in ancient China about 3,000 years ago. There are many complex notions that go into feng shui but a simple paring down of the philosophy has become popular in the Western hemisphere today. Basically, feng shui revolves around the chi or energy that surrounds all life.

The words feng shui literally mean wind water. Both concepts are associated with prosperity and good health in the Chinese lifestyle. To have good energy flowing through your home, use the basics of feng shui.

Would you have guessed that your bathroom has energy flowing around it? You might be surprised but it does and using the principles of feng shui you can make it a place that can bring feelings of calmness and serenity to your family.

Practitioners of feng shui use a couple of basic tools to get started. The first tool is the compass. A compass in the woods lets you know which way is up and guides you in the right direction. The same goes for the feng shui compass also called lopan. The compass gives the practitioner a deeper sense of the energy in the home and what needs to be where in order to allow the energy to flow without restraint.

The lopan will help you realize that different rooms in your home or office have individual feng shui needs. Using it correctly will determine the colors and array of feng shui elements needed in each room as well as taking into consideration what feng shui element governs the individuals in the room.

The compass looks similar to a compass you would use while hiking. There is a compass needle in the center. The compass itself consists of several concentric circles that guide the practitioner to give you a layout of what your home needs in order to be whole again.

The other feng shui tool is called the bagua. You can use a blueprint or scale drawing of your home to layout an energy map. There will be eight sections: North, Northwest, South, Southeast, East, Northeast and West, Southwest. Each area will have a governing feng shui purpose, element and color in your life.

Feng shui doctrine states you can profoundly affect the energy around you simply by creating a space that favors you. Doing this correctly requires a basic understanding of feng shui colors, the five elements of feng shui and how energy actually moves through each room.

More on that next time.

Feng shui is a sorta guidebook about the placement and design of a place to allow good flow of energy. And it's not just placement of the bed and couch. The placement of the actual house and landscaping will affect the ch'i ( energy ) of the house in a big fashion. Let's commence with a few tips to bear in mind when looking inspecting the location for your dream home.

1. First and most vital, research the history of a property. Find out what occurred with the previous tenants, and the ones before them. And even the ones before them. Ask neighbors, or selling agent. If all the prior inhabitants have had money Problems, family Problems, etc, possibilities are there's bad feng shui going on. Best to move on and look for another house.

two. Pay attention to the road placement. The road in front of your place should not be pointing directly into your house. If a place is sitting at a dead end, in a T-intersection, or in the middle of cul-de-sac, then energy is continually flowing straight down that road into the house, then building up and stagnating there. This is not good ; the ch'i must continue to flow, like air. If it is getting stuck in your home, it can go bad.

3. Pay attention to what's around the house. Inspect the terrain closely. Ideally, the property should have a dark turtle in the back ( a mountain or hill, another house, a row of trees, a fence, for example. ), a dragon ( a place, a tree ) to the left, a white tiger ( a smaller house or tree ) to the right, and a phoenix ( open ground, a circular flowerbed, a meandering stream or road ) in front. All those exotic names are merely a nice way to state the clear -a house on its own is not ideal, as there is nothing to slow the flow of ch'i. Most homes will have all of these things around them already, but it doesn't hurt to consider it your first time seeing a place. Other things to think about are "poison arrows," like telephone poles, flagpoles, or the corner of a house pointing your way. They can impede the energy flow to the house. Even a hospice can be a source of bad energy.

four. Something that possibly doesn't automatically spring to mind is the shape of the property ; but that may be vital too. Always go for something symmetrical, like a square or a rectangle. If your property is really close to square, use hedges to fill in the spots that make it irregular. Triangle-shaped properties can create disharmony. If you love a place and positively have to have an it but it's's on a triangle-shaped lot, it's better for the wide side to be in the back ; the other way indicates an inability to economize.

When you visit a property, notice the shapes of the things around. I know it sounds strange, but kind of squint your eyes and see what you see, like you used to do as a kid, when you were looking at the clouds in the sky. If anything looks like something hostile, then watch out. That would be an indication of some anti-ch'i. You need enough stuff to slow the energy down to capture it but allow it to also flow.

Feng Shui helps you create a simple balanced living environment. Learning how to correctly organize what surrounds you can enhance your life and that is about. Decorating with Feng Shui is about. Decorating with Feng Shui principals involves the movement of energy at a balanced pace. This involves decorating with colors, scent and mirrors.

This practice believes that colors have a robust and individual effect on folk. Different shades create different results on folks's psychological behavior. Here are some facets of color that affect your mind. For good luck select the color red. This would be the perfect color to use for your front doorway. Yellow and purple are regarded as auspicious and beneficial to one's moods. For freshness, peace and growth green is the color of choice.

Darker colors can either be relaxing or depressing while lighter shades appear to be uplifting. Decorative orange and brown symbolize health, relationships and information. Colours that push restorative sleep as well as sexual healing are colors of human skin. This is from terribly pale white to rich chocolate brown. After deciding on your color scheme you also should harmonize all ornamental objects with warm earthy tones.

As well as being used as a decoration, mirrors in Feng Shui are used to draw in, move or change the flow of energy. Mirrors can enlarge a space, deflect something, flatten a wall or make a wall vanish. The shapes of mirrors used in Feng Shui are sometimes round or octagon. Most significantly is that mirrors be whole and complete, not mirror tiles that cut the image into chunks. Mirrors are great placed by front doors and ideal to harmonize the energy in the home.

It is wise to avoid excessive wall lighting but select full range lighting instead. Candle wall sconces give off nutrients and one of the strongest manifestations of energy. Be certain to buy candles with no toxins. You should usually place and keep your designs in a free flowing direction.

The essence of clocks in Feng Shui is the measuring of the passing of time. There are many good areas in the home to display clocks. The kitchen, living room or small office would be the best. It is almost a prerequisite to have a clock in ones bedroom. Have a battery operated clock verses an electric clock in order to protect your fitness. For a collection of clocks, display them in a huge corridor along the walls to keep the energy flowing in the right direction.

In this practice they also believe that many different paintings can augment your environment with good health, information, career, family, love, fame and wealth. To market longevity and good health, hang footage of deer, peaches, pine trees or bamboo in the east portion of your living room. To improve the area of knowledge and knowledge, use the colors of yellow or beige. Mountains, crystals and dragon carp designate the ascent toward religious awareness. For the advancement of your career your home office should be found in the north part of your house. Hang paintings of open fields, flowers and fish.

The color white should be used for the strength of your family bond. Hang photographs that awaken confidence, bravery and inspiration. Fanciful and imaginative pictures are also suitable. For true love hang works of art that send out love vibrations. Some symbols that convey romance would be of mandarin ducks, love birds and dragons. Fame pertains to grace and inner light. Select artifacts like snakes, horses or butterflies. All of them represent new opportunities, diplomacy and endurance. To depict wealth look for art work that exhumes victory in the face of a competition. Fish is also a symbol of prosperity and endurance.

To really decorate in this fashion you must compare each element represented by its color in relationship to each other. When you begin to apply the foundations of Feng Shui to your house you'll be amazed how a few simple changes of color, arrangement and placement can make your house calming and aesthetically pleasing.

When you're designing your home using feng shui, you know that the position of things is going to be very important. This is part of why your cactus placement is going to be vital to what you try to do in your room and in your house.

When you're planning your house using feng shui, you know the position of things is going to be critical. This is part of why your cactus placement is going to be vital to what you are attempting to accomplish in your room and in your house.

The best way to Use it intelligently

Firstly, you know that feng shui and cactus go together in a very significant way. However, you wish to be sure that you are using this way really sensibly. They go together in order to help you create more unity within your home or your garden, wherever you need the cactus to be. So, you have to be certain that you are preparing them in the correct way.

When you're having a look at cactus positions you need to be certain that you are using many different types of cactus plants, and not only 1 all alone. This is terribly necessary to the aspect. You would like to be sure that you are putting the many different sorts of cactus plants into one area, but that you are arranging them in the proper way.

The tallest of them should be in the middle with the smaller ones around the sides. This is important for your agreements. You want to be sure that the feng shui is done in the right manner, and this includes having them in the right position.

Next, you would like to be sure that you are thinking about feng shui and cactus in a general sense of placements. With the idea of it, you have got to be certain that your cactus is not in an area of your home where it'll cause harm. Most of the time, when you are taking a look at it you should have your cactus outside. Otherwise you may have it in a corner of the home, but you have to make sure that you balance it with something else so that it is not by itself.

If you follow these directions, you should not have any Problems with your cactus placement. As with everything and feng shui, you simply desire to make sure the cactus is in the right place and that it's facing the right direction. Then, you'll be ready to make your house as gorgeous as possible.

You may not have the opportunity to take a full week of silence and rest, but you can still create mini-retreat for a day in your own residence. The idea is to make more "yin" ( calm ) energy and take sanctuary from the hyper-"yang" ( active ) world we reside in.

The day before your retreat starts :

* Clear all of the litter and then deep clean your bedroom and master bath with important oil products. Better yet, delegate it and have the whole house cleaned! Make certain there's no muddle underneath your bed ( so chi can circulate round you and help refresh you ). * Menu-plan, make a shopping list and stock up on fresh fruits, vegetables, juices, smoothies, additions, detoxification teas, small spa treats and such like. If doing a clean, buy all your necessary herbs * Put fresh green colored sheets on your bed and clean gold towels in the toilet to support your healing. * Surround yourself with beautifully scented, fresh flowers. * Gather reflective music, meditation cd's, and dharma talks as well as holy texts or poetry you would like to read. * Unplug all computers, phones, TVs and have a sabbatical from your cell phone, e-mail, the nightly news and papers. Make efforts to unplug all electronics in your bedroom. * Mix up an aromatherapy spritzer using filtered water and sweet orange, neroli or bergamot oils. When you spray it over yourself or in your environment, it will boost and lift up your chi.

During Your Retreat :

* Drink from pitchers of filtered water with fresh orange slices. * Create tiny at-home spa treatments with a reflexology roller ; steam inhalations or scented hot cloths with essential oils ; herbal foot soaks ; body brushing ; salt scrubs ; facials and the like. * Take part in tea rites with lovely pots, cups and teas from Japan, India or China. * Play singing bowls, gongs, tingshaws or bells around your own body and throughout your space. * Move your body each day with movement practices like qi gong, yoga, tai chi or free-form dancing. * Eat your meals ( super-healthy ones ) outside in the clean air. * Pray at dawn or beneath the night stars out in the dewy grass.

* Write truthfully in your journal about everything in your life that's draining your life force-people, events, eventualities, things, thoughts and habits. Make a promise after your spa retreat to start to clear them one at a time until you feel free! * Turn off all of the lights at nightfall and go by the light of candles or lanterns. Go to sleep early and give your chi deep restoration. * create a special altar in your bedroom devoted to your healing, rejuvenation and spiritual life. * Be quiet. Meditate. Take naps. * Adjust your chi with the inhale / breathe out Breathing Meditation which you can find over at my blog.

And now? Open your calendar and schedule yourself for some deep rejuvenation-a week, a day, half-day-for so long as you can! And do not forget to make time for the preparations. Enjoy and relax in the Feng Shui of your body, mind and spirit.

We are in the middle of the Year of the Ox; that slow, steady, hard working energy has characterized most of the year so far. Periodically I take time to really examine my living space to see where I can strengthen the feng shui and, as a result, enhance my lifestyle.

I've had plans to extend the patio area in my backyard for sometime. The goal was to create more balance and make the outdoor living space more functional. This section of the yard falls in the East Family/Health and the Northeast Knowledge area. The design concept has been worked out for some time but, while waiting for an opportune time to move ahead with project, I was bothered by a small section of the yard I called the "dead zone".

This "void" or "dead zone" in the yard is where I've made a mistake. I should have focused on improving this area along time ago because aesthetically it looks lifeless and blank. Certainly from a feng shui perspective it tends toward imbalance and weakness. The area lacks a beautiful focal point that will give it life and vitality. Just glancing at it triggers a feeling of dissatisfaction and emptiness.

After considering how the "dead zone" impacted the feng shui of the backyard as well as the house, I knew I had to find a temporary solution. Up until then, I kept telling myself that the area would be remedied when the patio is extended; all the while I was annoyed every time I looked at it. The solution came in the form of 3 trees and 2 lanterns. I potted 3 trees in grow pots and placed solar lanterns between them to create a finished, balanced arrangement.

Most of us have areas in our home we want to update or improve when the time is right. Avoid making the mistake I did by at least making some enhancement, even if it's temporary. This is especially true if you have an area that is bothersome to you. My solution was to carry the design elements from the rest of the backyard to remedy the area where the "void" was. The arrangement is reusable and dollar wise because I've already started growing the trees that will be planted at a later time.

Another feng shui concept I've developed focuses on the room or area where you spend most of your time. Aside from the bedroom (and perhaps the office) this is usually the family room. Wherever this area is for you, it is "a room of great influence" and it is vital to pay careful attention to the room's balance and harmony. First and foremost, the room should elicit a sense of satisfaction and peace both visually and viscerally. The living space you spend a lot of time in has an impact on your quality of life. A recent enhancement I made to my "room of influence" was to put crown molding in and it created these changes in the room:

* Improved the floor to ceiling or spacial balance * Ambiance of the room was elevated because the "eye" tends upward toward the new design feature * Added a sense of strength and solidity to the entire room

I hope you've gained a greater understanding about the feng shui of your living space and it's connection to your quality of life.
