Important Basic Feng Shui Bedroom Do's and Don'ts

DO use a compass

Stand in the middle of the room and hold the compass level and waist-high. Then make a diagram of your room, creating nine squares. Put the correct direction on each square. Now you are ready to move the items according to compass or your personal auspicious directions. (A compass only costs about $2-$5 at Wal-Mart or Target.)

Give yourself a mini-space clearing

--If you decide to use feng shui in your room, then clear out all unnecessary items and junk from your drawers, closet, and under the bed.

--Clean thoroughly by vacuuming, dusting and washing windows, ceiling fans, etc.

--Now you're ready to feng shui your room, but follow the DON'Ts below:

DON'Ts

Don't have open book shelves opposite your bed or behind you as you study. These act like knives and will encourage people "talking behind your back."

Don't have water or pictures of water (this aggravates asthma, allergies, and can encourage respiratory or sinus problems). So take out the Zen fountain or fish tank.

Don't have plants in the bedroom. Plants use up body energy in your bedroom.

BED DOs and DON'Ts

DO make sure it has the widest view of the room and entryway so you can see the door easily

DO try to sleep with the top of your head pointing in one of your personal feng shui directions (see below)

DO have a solid wall behind it (or at least curtains) vs. a window

DO make sure you cannot see a bathroom, toilet, or stairs from the bed

DON'T have the bed against a shared wall of a bathroom or toilet

DON'T have a mirror or television that reflects the bed

DON'T have your feet point out the door from your bed

Using personal feng shui: Having your head pointed in one of your auspicious directions (AD) is one of the best ways to tap good luck. Click here to calculate your personal feng shui directions. This link will tell you what directions are the best for you. Even if your room is in the Southwest portion of the house and this is not a good direction for you, you can still orient your bed so that your head points in one of your good directions.

DESK DOs and DON'Ts

DO try to place your desk in NE corner of your room

DO always sit where you can see the door and anyone entering the room easily

DO try to face one of your AD

DO keep a bright light turned on here to enhance your education luck

DO hang a lead crystal from the ceiling here, or place rock crystals in this corner of the room and in the NE corner of the desk for better study concentration

DO add a globe to this location to improve test scores and success in school

DRESSER

Place in East corner if wood

Place in West corner if metallic-colored, or if painted white, silver, or gold

Place in North if black or blue

Place in SE if green

Place in South or SW if red, orange, purple

COMPUTER, PHONE, & STEREO

Place phone in the NW corner of room to bring more helpful people into your life.

Keep stereo playing on low volume while you are away to keep energy active in your room and attract helpful people to you.

DECORATIONS, ETC.

Mirrors: Not recommended in the bedroom. If used, make sure you cannot see yourself from the bed.

Lamps: Place one in the south (fame and recognition; a lava lamp is great here!), the NE (educational luck), and the SW (to help you with your sweetie or bring one if you don't have one already -- lava lamps are also great here,too!). The lamps will energize these areas.

Pictures: Make sure are these positive images that make you happy. Violence, dark, or brooding-types of pictures are not suitable for a place of rest and relaxation.

Troubles with mom and dad? Place a happy picture of your family in the East corner of your room to help these relationships become easier and more harmonious.

Looking for a new love? Place a picture of your heart's desire in the SW to help this relationship -- or to encourage a new one relationship, place a picture of your "ideal" person here.

Bulletin boards: Hang these on the south wall of your room. Pin pictures of famous people, letters of recognition, awards, ribbons, or certificates here for more added recognition any kind of accomplishment is perfect for this location.

A light that illuminates this area is especially helpful! Place trophies on a shelf in this location for continued success and recognition. Paint this board red for an extra boost in recognition energy!

Ceiling fans: not recommended because they displace body energy while sleeping; if used, place small red dot on each blade.

Clutter: If you don't feel well or you're having troubles in your life, clear your space. Get a box and do a thorough cleaning out. This doesn't mean you have to throw things away.

Store them in the garage or attic. If after a while you don't use any of these things, then donate them to charity. Do make note of how you feel once your room is clear.

There are two different "schools of feng shui". The Eastern school uses a compass to find your Wealth area, while the Western school of feng shui orients everything from your front door.
There are many ways to enhance your feng shui to encourage wealth to grow. I don't know a lot about the Eastern method, so I will try to explain the Western method to you. In the western method, the main entry (the intended front door, not necessarily the one you use the most, as a lot of people enter side or back doors) is the mouth of chi, where the energy will come into your home. You want to make sure that the door and entry are clean and inviting. A small fountain or wind chime near your entrance are good ways to encourage chi to flow in. Also, avoid a mirror directly opposite the door, as this will cause the chi to move too quickly or even bounce back out!
As for encouraging wealth, the back left corner is a good place to enhance. Good enhancements for the area will be things that sybolize money and wealth to you, gold coins (they don't have to be real), jewelry, pictures of things that make you think of wealth, etc. Keep the area clean and clutter free. The color purple is also considered to be a good attractor for this gua.
Another thing to think about as far as feng shui and money is to keep your oven in good repair and clean. Also, keep toilet lids down and even block drains for other sinks if you want to, as they can "wash the money down the drain". If you have dripping faucets, repair them!
You can do feng shui on many levels. You can do a cure or a hundred cures, it all depends on your comfort level. You can even put a money attractor in the far left corner of every room of your house because the bagua map can be used on any space, from an entire house to a single room...even a car! Try not to take it overboard, but also keep in mind that there is no ONE thing you have to do, you can pick an idea that feels right for you and see how it works, then go from there.

1.Color and design are critical.

Paint bedrooms with calm, soothing colors. Good color choices for bedrooms are skin colors: yellows, browns, taupes, pinks, or beige. Avoid blue or dark-colored ceilings, wallpaper with plants or flowers (a feng-shui no-no for bedrooms), actual plants or flowers in the bedroom, or water elements, such as fish, lakes, or water.

2.The bed is where it's at.

Make sure the bed is at the widest part of the room and the door to the room can be seen from the bed. This is a critical feng shui element. Bed placement is extremely important especially if the bed is placed on the same wall as the bedroom door. This will bring serious disagreements for the couple.

The bed should also not face a bathroom, see a toilet, share the same wall as a toilet, or be directly opposite a door. It's also best if the bed doesn't face a closet or bookshelves of some kind.

Also, be sure to give yourself some support. Beds that have the headboard to a window give little support. If this is the best (or only) position for the bed, place a wooden screen between the bed and the window to simulate a wall or hang heavy drapes that can be closed at night.

Headboards are best if they are solid. Iron bars can create headaches and lack of support. Lastly, don't go out without making your bed. Really, now, how hard is it to make a bed?

3.Look Up.

Got a ceiling fan whirring above your bed? Lots of us do. This could be cooling you down... literally and romantically. Ceiling fans above the bed disrupt your body's chi (energy) -- and your romantic chi. You also might avoid turning on the fan for a week and see what happens... who knows? If you are trying to conceive, turn the fan off altogether.

4.Look down.

If there's junk piled under the bed, remove it. Store soft items such as winter clothes, blankets, or pillows, if you just have to. Be absolutely sure there are no dangerous items such as guns, knives, or other harsh instruments under the bed. These harm your health, your romance, and your sleep.

5.Remove reflections.

Mirrors and televisions should not be in the bedroom -- or any reflective surfaces. This creates disruptive chi in the bedroom that harms sleep -- or creates divorces.

6.Decorate sparingly.

Decorating the room correctly is important. Look at all the elements here to get more ideas about appropriate decorating for your romantic retreat.

Absolutely no plants, water, and flowers in the bedroom. Take all plants, flowers, and water features out of the bedroom. Water and plants can drown the energy in a bedroom. Even pictures featuring water, ice, or snow are poor bedroom decorating choices.

Flowers give off too much male (yang) energy, also making a poor choice for a restful bedroom. Dried flowers should be removed as they are dead energy. Seeing or hearing water from the bed (view of the bathroom, maybe?) can create financial problems and sinus/respirator problems.

7. Remove objects of work.

These can be treadmills or other exercise equipment, desks, computers, bookshelves filled with work-related books, or objects that remind either of you of something to do. Even hobbies and projects are not good choices for your love nest.

8. Keep it clean.

The bedroom is the place where you restore yourself after a long day. It should be clean and neat. Make sure it is cleaned regularly, or you can expect problems with health or finances. This also includes closets in your bedroom. Make sure they are neat and that you can find what you are looking for quickly.

Lastly, make needed repairs. Ask yourself if your room is in good working order? Is the carpet coming up or do the windows stick? Your room must function well on all levels. This includes making sure the door opens and closes correctly - and locks, too! Oil creaky door hinges.

In ancient times as well as today, Feng Shui, (風水) pronounced in English as [fʊŋ'ʃweɪ] ("fung shway"), was known as "Kan-Yu" which means 'The Law of Heaven and Earth.’ [1] Today's Feng Shui schools teach that it is the ancient Chinese practice of placement and arrangement of space to achieve harmony with the environment. Feng shui literally translates as "wind-water." This is a cultural shorthand taken from the following passage of the Zhangshu (Book of Burial) by Guo Pu of the Jin Dynasty:[2]

The qi that rides the wind stops at the boundary of water.[3]

Feng shui is a discipline with guidelines that are compatible with many techniques of agricultural planning as well as internal furniture arrangements. Space, weather, astronomy, and geomagnetism are basic components of feng shui. Proponents claim that feng shui has an effect on health, wealth, and personal relationships; critics consider it a pseudoscience.

Early feng shui relied on astronomy to find correlations between humans and the universe [4] and it is inseparable from an understanding of political power in premodern China.[5]

Chinese often used the celestial poles determined by the pole stars to determine the north-south axis of settlements. This technique explains why Shang palaces at Xiaotun lie 10° east of due north. In some cases, as Paul Wheatley observed[6], they bisected the angle between the directions of the rising and setting sun to find north. This technique provided the more precise alignments of the Shang walls at Yanshi and Zhengzhou.

Currently Early Yanshao and Hongshan cultures provide the earliest evidence for feng shui. Professor David Pankenier and his associates reviewed astronomical data for the time of the Banpo dwellings (4000 BCE) to show that the asterism Yingshi (Lay out the Hall, in the Warring States period and early Han era) corresponded to the sun's location at this time. Centuries before, the asterism Yingshi was known as Ding. It was used to indicate the appropriate time to build a capital city, according to the Shijing. Apparently an astronomical alignment ensured that Banpo village homes were sited for solar gain.[7]

The grave at Puyang (radiocarbon dated 5,000 BP) that contains mosaics of the Dragon and Tiger constellations and Beidou (Dipper) is similarly oriented along a north-south axis.[8] The presence of both round and square shapes in the Puyang tomb, and at Hongshan culture ceremonial centers, suggests that the gaitian cosmography (heaven-round, earth-square) was present in Chinese society long before it appeared in the Zhou Bu Suan Jing.[9]

Cosmography that bears a striking resemblance to modern feng shui compasses (and computations) were found on a jade unearthed at Hanshan (c. 3000 BCE). The design is linked by Li Xueqin to the liuren astrolabe, zhinan zhen, and Luopan. [10]

All capital cities of China followed rules of Feng Shui for their design and layout. These rules were codified during the Zhou era in the "Kaogong ji" (Manual of Crafts). Rules for builders were codified in the "Lu ban jing" (Carpenter's Manual). Graves and tombs also followed rules of Feng Shui. From the earliest records, it seems that the rules for the structures of the graves and dwellings were the same.

There were feng shui devices before the invention of the magnetic compass, which occurred comparatively late in the long history of feng shui. According to the Zhouli the original device may have been a gnomon, although Yao, Huangdi, and other figures were said to possess devices such as the south-pointing chariot.

As Derek Walters observed[11], "The luopan was originally a scientific instrument, used for astronomical observation." The oldest excavated examples of instruments used for feng shui are liuren astrolabes. These consist of a lacquered, two-sided board with astronomical sightlines. Liuren astrolabes have been unearthed from tombs that date between 278 BC and 209 BC. The markings are virtually unchanged from the astrolabe to the first magnetic compasses.[12]

Since the invention of the magnetic compass for use in Feng Shui[13], some feng shui disciplines require the use of a compass. This compass could be a Luopan (Chinese Feng Shui compass of the types San Yuan, San He, and Zong He) or one of the earlier versions such as a south-pointing spoon (zhinan zhen).

The history of the Luopan compass takes us back to the Zhou dynasty (770-476 BCE), when emperor Shing combined the knowledge of the compass with that of the I-ching. The compass consists of a magnetic needle that point towards magnetic north not true north. The foundation of the I-ching is in the trigrams.

The trigrams are the set of three broken and/or solid lines that you typically find around a Chinese mirror.

In Traditional Compass techniques these trigrams determine the divination of fortune. The traditional Luopan has 36 rings of information. These trigrams occupy the first circle of the luopan. How these rings line up with the compass and the combination of the reading of these rings determines your fortune.

Many people are attracted to Feng Shui and for many good reasons. While most simply believe that it is just some oriental superstitious set of ideas on interior design (but that is just part of the extensive definition for Feng Shui), the Feng Shui that we know today is actually made up of various schools of thought and incorporates the different cultures under which it was born.
